ABSTRACT:Linguistic iconicity is one of the hot issues of cognitive linguistic research. At present, researches of iconicity mainly focus on syntactic field and few works on phonetic field have been found. Based on A Dictionary of English Onomatopoeia(2009) edited by Fang Shifu and Li Yao and Onomatopoeia in Modern Chinese(2007) edited by Li Jinger, this thesis aims to prove that onomatopoeia is iconically correspondent to its referent, by analyzing and classifying onomatopoeia. And then, according to the above, this thesis tries to put forward phonetic iconicity, and develop it into sound-symbol iconicity, synesthesia iconicity and meaning-transferred iconicity.

In the previous part, both English and Chinese onomatopoeia has been classified and characteristics of each group also have been set forth. And from the fourth part, it can bee achieved that, according to the classifications of onomatopoeia both in English and Chinese, iconicity of onomatopoeia can be got and there are three kinds of ionicity: sound-symbol iconicity, phonetic synesthesia iconicity and meaning-transferred iconicity. Moreover, according to the definition of iconicity made by Wan Yin, it can be concluded that the fundamental definition of phonetic iconicity is that linguistic symbols are iconically correspondent to the referent in sound. Besides, according to iconicity of onomatopoeia, it can be concluded that onomatopoeia has phonetic iconicity, and the first two sorts of iconicity of onomatopoeia: sound-symbol iconicity and phonetic synesthesia iconicity, can be good evidence to it and good explanations to the theory of phonetic iconicity. Therefore, the hypothesis that onomatopoeia has iconicity, especially phonetic iconicity is true. In brief, this thesis succeeds in confirming the truth that onomatopoeia has iconicity, especially phonetic iconicity, and moreover, classifying sorts of phonetic iconicity by means of quantitive and qualitative analysis.
