Abstract:Dickinson’s life is closely related to flowers. The images of various flowers are widely dispersed in Emily Dickinson’s poems. By analyzing the flowers’ images, Dickinson successfully expressed her inner world. The images of flowers in her poems are closely related to the particular society where she lived. Her garden life is the resources of her poetic creation. She chooses flowers to symbolize women’s low social status in men dominated society. The hidden images and symbolic meanings help to illustrate the true themes of the poetry. Dickinson’s poems include four themes: Life, Love, Death and Immortality, and Nature. By analyzing them respectively, this paper express Dickinson’s different viewpoint on these four themes. From the themes of her poetry, we know that Dickinson’s attitude towards love is brave, and she has a strong faith in her life. About death, she has no fear; for nature, she loves it much. As her works do not meet the aesthetic taste of the time, she was still alive but not be appreciated, and her works also nobody care at that time. Dickinson used rose to symbolize her unfortunate fate and her reclusive life.
