Abstract:As the global market for motors has become increasingly competitive, accurate and appropriate translation of motor brand names has gained the greatest ever importance. With a brief discussion of Nida’s translation theories in general and a detailed study of his theory of Functional Equivalence in particular, the author of this thesis has set up the framework in which a set of translation methods are explored and summarized. Special attention is focused on the linguistic and cultural perspectives, with the latter discussed in greater details, in the hope that this thesis might help in some way improve the quality of future translation of motor brand names.

中文摘要:随着国际汽车市场的竞争日渐激烈,准确且适当的汽车商标名的翻译显得空前地重要。本文作者全面简明地介绍了奈达翻译理论,尤其是深入分析了他的功能对等理论,并在此框架内探讨和归纳了一套汽车商标名英汉互译的方法。文章特别关注从语言和文化的角度进行研究,以有助于一定程度上提高未来汽车商标名英汉互译的质量。

After the investigation of all the examples and findings in this thesis, it can be summarized that: (1) Under the theory of Functional Equivalence, the target language readers should show the response as identical as possible to that of the source language readers; (2) Most motor brands go international without concerning the linguistic and cultural perspectives. The more culture and background is known about a motor brand name, the better its translation will be and higher customer recognition degree it will get; (3) Totally five translation methods are put forward, however, the selection of the methods depends on the following: the origin of brand name; the culture of the target language; the background of the words in source language.
