Abstract:This paper mainly studies the image of Eliza in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In the literary masterpieces Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Eliza clearly carries another kind faith which will obtain freedom by resisting. The extremely prominent characters of Eliza are her kindness, diligence, great courage, rebellious spirit and great power of Mother’s love. With the analysis of the image of Eliza in this novel, the rebellion spirit of female is revealed and the great power of mother’s love is greatly appreciated.

摘要:这篇论文主要是研究《汤姆叔叔的小屋》中伊莱扎这个人物形象。文学名著 《汤姆叔叔的小屋》中的伊莱扎,她有着另一种使她可以通过反抗从而获得自由的信仰。伊莱扎有着独特的性格特点,她的善良,她的勤劳,她的勇气,她的敢于背叛的精神以及她作为母亲伟大的力量。通过分析小说中伊莱扎这个人物形象,揭示了女性的背叛精神以及母爱力量的伟大。

As a great novelist in America in nineteenth century, Harriet Stowe was an ardent opponent of slavery. According to Stowe’s son, when Abraham Lincoln met her in 1862 Lincoln commented, “So this is the little lady who started this Great War.”(Stowe, 1999: 203)Uncle Tom’s Cabin is considered as the most influential anti-slavery novel in that period. It focuses on the poor life of black slaves and their struggle to achieve freedom, and makes a vehement attack upon the chattel slavery. As a feminine writer, Stowe pays close attention to the sever effect of the slave system on women, and dramatizes women’s roles, specially the image of Eliza, and power in the fight against the chattel slave system to redeem the fallen world in Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
By describing and analyzing the image of Eliza in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, it is obvious that Eliza is a pious Christian, a great mother, a brave woman who revolts her master and mistress to save her son and pursue freedom and a happy life under the harsh slavery. She shows her personalities of great rebellious spirit, independence, and goodness. The portrayal of Eliza’s personality shows that Harriet Stowe recognizes the abolishment of slavery system is necessary and inevitable. Such a strong rebellious woman with multiple personalities is perfectly created by Stowe’s female consciousness. It shows the great power of female and the great courage to pursue freedom. Moreover, Stowe formed the image of Eliza under great influence of social background. Eliza was courageous enough to struggle against the slavery, her struggling changes her slave fate, and she has the freedom, the happy family and the happy life like the whites. The most important is that she has been her own master.
