Abstract:Some critics claim that pun cannot be translated ; however, in this paper, this point will be argued. The author will make the argument through two aspects: the theoretical and the practical one by introducing some supportive theories and illustrating examples from Shakespeare’s Four Comedies.
In addition, this paper will be mainly concerned about the translation skills employed in translating puns by giving their definitions and introducing them through examples. In order to do an analysis of these different skills, to find out their respective advantages and limitations, the author will make a contrastive analysis of the two versions of Shakespeare’s Four Comedies by Zhu Shenghao and Liang Shiqiu.
