Sara was a beautiful girl who had a kind heart and strong-minded characteristics. Like above, Sara’s charming characteristics and the implications of the author, it was clear for readers to understand this novel and the girl Sara. In this thesis, some main characteristics were about Sara. Kind-heartedness and strong-mindedness were important. From the beginning, Sara was a girl whose father was a rich man. In the private school, she was regarded as a little princess. She had everything she wanted and she never needed to do anything by herself. When her father was dead, she was alone and had no money. She became a maid in the school and she lived in a small and cold attic in which she had another world to live and made some special friends. In her poor times, she was kind to everyone. Her kind-heartedness moved people. Sara was a bright little girl, good at learning languages. She loved books and had “a hungry craving for everything readable” (Janice Kirkland, 1997, p.192). To get books, she made an arrangement with Ermengarde, who had trouble in reading the books her father sent her. Sara then told her what the books were about in a vivid way so that she could remember. Sara imagined the stories, as if her cold garret became a warm room full of comfortable furniture, shelves of books, and silver dishes of delicious food. By imagining, she almost forgot that she was cold and hungry. She realized that a real princess had not only a beautiful appearance, but also the inside beauty. Even though she was a poor, she was still a princess, a real beautiful princess. No matter what difficult she met, she solved it with strong-mindedness and had a kind heart to everyone. Through the hard time, Sara was found by her father’s friend and she was given a lot of money. She was a rich girl now. She used her money to help poor people and did her best to make people warm.
