Abstract:Eustacia and Catherine are the heroines delineated in The Return of the Native and Wuthering Heights respectively, and they both pursued their own happinesses and self-identities but ultimately failed. These two heroines are just the women's representatives in 19th-century of Britain, one is dignified and luxurious, the other is wild and rebellious. Even though there is a great disparity in their personalities, they still share the similar tragic fates in the terms of love.
An environment carrier of these two stories is the wilderness of Yorkshire and Egdon, which not brought any benefits for them but pushed them into the abyss, and eventually they became the victim of the British odd-fellow society. The wilderness is characterized as an original and isolated world against the civilized one. Throughout these novel, it not only serves as a setting, but a destructive force that ruins everything. In an attempt to distinguish their miserable fates in depth, this essay will offer a new interpretation, especially by analyzing the setting of wilderness throughout these two novels. It is found that the wilderness possesses a great spirit—a rabid, strong and free will. Once people exchange with this spirit in the nature, the valuable personality would be created, otherwise it is doomed to destruction when breaking and abandoning the harmony between the nature and human.
