Abstract:Functional Equivalence emphasizes the important role of the target readers. During the translation, the translator should take the reception of the target readers into serious consideration to make the target readers understand and appreciate the target text as well as the source language readers. Based on Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory, this paper attempts to make a comparison of the two Chinese versions of The Cop and the Anthem, which makes a small diachronic corpus. And also the paper makes a statistics of the two versions on lexical, syntactical and rhetorical levels and tries to explain the reasons that cause the differences from the perspective of social cultural environment and the development of the target language.

In general, the two translated versions both are efficient in accuracy. By comparing, Li’ version is more close to the original text in consideration of manner and style. And Pan’s version is more changeable in syntactic level. In his version, the sentential forms are varied; the narration is natural and in accord with the familiar use of language in the target readers.
The examples given in the proceeding paragraphs demonstrate the significance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory in the perspectives of semantic equivalence and stylistic equivalence. While translating a text, a translator must remember that his main job is reproducing the meaning of the text to the target readers, the form adopted in the original test could be dropped if necessary. At the same time, the style of the author is an important element which should not be neglected.
During the translation, a translator should avoid being crude in the semantic and stylistic levels. Semantic equivalence is the most important element while the stylistic equivalence should be taken into consideration in the second place. If equivalence is achieved, the target readers could be able to understand and enjoy the text to the maximum extent as the same as the source readers while reading the translated version, and this is the final goal which any translator should try his best to achieve.
