Abstract: Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of America’s most influential writers in the nineteenth century. She became a famous novelist for her masterpiece —Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the representative work of American anti-slavery novel. This paper is aimed to analyze several major characters in Uncle Tom’s Cabin such as Uncle Tom, Eliza, Little Eva, several ideal mothers and Simon Legree with Northrop Frye’s the myth-archetype criticism theory.

摘要:哈丽叶特·比彻·斯托是十九世纪美国最具影响力的作家之一,因她的代表作---作为美国废奴主要文学代表作的《汤姆叔叔的小屋》而成名。本文旨在运用诺斯罗普·弗莱的神话原型批评理论对小说中的主要人物原型进行分析,如分析汤姆叔叔、伊莱扎、小伊娃、几位虔诚的基督教母亲和西蒙·雷格里的人物形象。

Christianity is an essential part of western culture. Many European and American literature works’ characters, images and plots can be found the respective achetypes in Bible. Mrs. Stowe is influenced by Christianity, and she sticks to the belief that people are born to be equal and should enjoy freedom. Also Christianity plays an important role in Mrs. Stowe’s works, specially in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The Christian in her hands has magic power. When Mrs. Stowe writes the novel, she uses many myth-archetypes, plots and images from Bible and the religious dorctine to evoke the evils of the slave system. This paper has used the archetype theory to analyse the major characters in Uncle Tom’s Cabin to reveal Christianity in the novel and attack the cruelty of slavery.
