Abstract: One of the masterworks of Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is the milestone in American literature. This paper is aimed to study the theme of freedom in the novel by analyzing the constant pursuit of freedom of Huck and black slave Jim: Huck abandons hypocrisy and corruption of “civilized” society to get the mental freedom; Jim escapes from slavery to seek the physical freedom and equality. To Huck, the journey is a journey of moral growth, consciousness and learning. Huck makes the western territory as the new goals, which symbolizes that the Americans continue to bid farewell to the old world and have a better vision and expectations of a free new world. Jim’s consciousness of being an equal “human” embodies that the black people desire freedom and pursue the truly “human” life. In a sense, it reveals that the American people adore and love freedom and equality.
