Abstract: Oscar Wilde, an Irish-born dramatist, novelist and essayist, is the representative figure of English Aesthetic Movement. He has experienced the rising and climax period of English aesthetic Movement. Absorbing previous aesthetes’ theories and focusing on the theory of “Art for art’s sake,” Wilde adds some new and astonishing theories to aesthetics, such as “life’s imitation of art”, “life’s detachment of art”, “art has nothing to do with morality” etc., which are thoroughly shown in his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. After a close reading of the novel, the author of this thesis discovers that Wilde tries to create a beautiful ivory tower but can not distract his attention from the mortal world. His theories are full of paradox in that the physical aspect and moral aspect are perfectly integrated into his Aestheticism. A study of the paradox and contradictions will better our understanding of the significance of Wilde and his theories.
