Abstract: Butterfly Lovers and Romeo and Juliet are classical Chinese and Western literary works respectively and they are typical representatives of odes to love of youngsters. In both of these two masterpieces, the main characters struggle between feudal forces and ideal love and finally sacrifice themselves for their love. Despite the obvious similarities between the two works, it is found that there are many differences as well, i.e., the different characteristics of the protagonists, love patterns, forms of revolt and endings of their tragedies. Causes of these differences may trace back to the cultural distinctions between the ancient Chinese and Western societies.
