Abstract:Anxiety is the emotion that most obstructs the learner’s English acquisition. As most of the English learners are students, who learn English mainly through teacher’s teaching in class, the study of English classroom anxiety is very essential and beneficial.
In this paper, by reviewing literature and former findings, the author tries to sum up the possible factors that cause English major students’ classroom anxiety and attempts to explore practical strategies from teachers’ point of view on how to alleviate English classroom anxiety.
One of the findings of this paper shows that English majors’ classroom anxiety derives from two main factors, the intrinsic factors (including students’ own strict requirements, indrawn and shy characters and a lack of self-confidence) and the extrinsic factors (mainly from teacher’s point of view, including a solemn classroom atmosphere, incorrect ways of asking questions and improper classroom evaluations). Another finding is three practical measures that can help teachers to reduce students’ classroom anxiety. They are creating a harmonious and relaxing classroom atmosphere, using the right way to ask questions and giving proper classroom evaluations.

中文摘要:焦虑是影响英语习得的最大情感障碍。 由于大部分的英语学习者都是学生,主要通过教师的课堂教学来学习英语,因此研究英语课堂焦虑是十分必要和有益的。
通过回顾文献资料和前人研究成果,本文尝试总结了导致英语专业生课堂焦虑的原因,并探讨了教师如何减轻英语课堂焦虑。
结果显示,导致课堂焦虑有内因(学生自身的严格要求;内向和害羞的性格;缺乏自信)和外因(主要从教师角度出发,包括严肃的课堂气氛;不恰当的提问和课堂评价)。笔者为此提出了三种可行性策略:营造和谐轻松的课堂氛围;正确提问以及适当评价。
