Abstract:Ernest Hemingway is a giant of modern literature. "The Old Man and the sea" is Hemingway's work during his later years, is also one of his most famous novel, which can be considered as his masterpiece. This paper will analysis the symbolism in "The Old Man and The Sea” and explain Hemingway's philosophy of life. The main character Santiago in the novel, although he has not caught any fish for 84 days, he was never disheartened and continued to fishing alone. During the fishing process, Santiago caught a rare big marlin, but experienced a hard struggle in the sea that is symbolizing the cruel society. The old person who contends with the shark has had to lose in this competition and goes back home with big marlin's bone. This reflected Hemingway's philosophy of life: People should be brave when facing tribulations and the destiny, insists to struggle, the significance of life is not based on success or failure, but lies in the process which man dares to struggle. Moreover, dares to challenge the brutal society reality is the performance of love and treasure the life deeply.
