Abstract:Jane Eyre is one of the great works of Charlotte Bronte, a famous British woman novelist in the early years of the nineteenth century. The content and characters of this novel are influenced by lots of things: the author’s life, the Gothic romance-a very popular type of novel in that time, the influence of Sir Walter Scott, Byron and Wordsworth. It is these factors that help to bring about this masterpiece. Using four stages in Jane Eyre’s life, Charlotte describes how an orphan girl changes herself from an ordinary, unsociable and weak girl to a strong, mature, dependent and confident woman. And the successful characterization of Jane Eyre is one of the reasons that the book can get such a great achievement. My paper wants to analyze Jane’s rebellious spirit from the different stages of Jane’s life in the novel, and I want to illustrate that Jane’s rebelliousness is developed step by step along with her pursuit of freedom and equal status in life.
