Abstract:Robinson Crusoe, written by Daniel Defoe, is regarded as the first realistic novel in the English literature. The novel, in essence, reflects the colonial expansion of western countries. In the novel, the two main characters Robinson and Friday respectively represent the colonizer and the colonized. After saved by Robinson, Friday changes a great deal in such aspects as identity, religious belief, language, and lifestyle. The process of being civilized is also a process of being colonized. Based on some Post- colonialism theories, the paper aims to discuss the colonization imposed on Friday and explore the undertones of Orientalism and Euro-centralism in the text.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces Daniel Defoe and his masterpiece Robinson Crusoe. The second chapter is a brief introduction to the theory of Post-colonialism. The third chapter analyzes the process of Friday’s colonization, in other words, how Friday loses his identity, religious belief, language, and lifestyle. The forth chapter explores the purpose of colonization on Friday. The last chapter is the conclusion.
