Abstract: This thesis aims at analyzing the use of symbolism in Moby Dick which was written by Herman Melville, one of the greatest American writers of the 19th century, and is regarded as one of the most symbolic novels in world literature. Moby Dick is a novel about the fighting between man and nature. In this novel, every character, even every object has different symbolic meanings from different views. The use of symbolism makes an artistic effect in this novel and makes the novel world-famous. This paper gives a brief introduction about the main characters and symbolism, then takes the main characters including the white whale Moby Dick, the captain Ahab, the ship Pequod in the novel as examples to analyze the use of symbolism in Moby Dick. After analysis, this paper concludes that human beings should be friendly to nature and how skillfully symbolism was used by Melville.

摘要:本文旨在对《白鲸》中的象征主义手法进行分析。作者赫尔曼·麦尔维尔是19世纪美国最伟大的作家之一,他的代表作《白鲸》被认为是世界文学上最具象征主义的小说之一。它是一部描写人与自然斗争的小说。小说中,每个人物事物都有不同的象征意义。本论文首先简要介绍了作品中主要人物和象征主义,接着分析人和物的象征意义,包括白鲸莫比迪克,船长阿哈伯,船裴考德号。通过分析,文章总结了人应友好对待自然以及象征主义手法的出色运用。
