Abstract:Pride and Prejudice is the most popular novel written by Jane Austin. It is a gentle but
witty satire of courtship and marriage. As is reflected in the novel, in 18th century, England, one major influence of the marriage is one’s possessions, which is closely bound up with social environment. The other is social status, which is determined by traditional social value. Despite the social environment, each one in the Bennet holds a different view of marriage of their own. The very difference of their attitudes toward marriage result in different marriages. In this paper, it depicts and analyses three types of marriages, that is, marriage based on both money and love; marriage based on money rather than love; marriage based on licentiousness rather than love. What the author praises highly is the perfect marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, a marriage with the guarantee of wealth, as well as love. This profoundly inspired modern young people never to betray love for the sake of money and licentiousness. The premise of steady happiness is sure to be the consummate mixture of love and fortune. The novel has a profound and far-lasting significance to English society in her time and people today in spirit and reality.
