Abstract:The most distinct difference between English and Chinese is the contrast between hypostaxis and parataxis. One aspect that reflects the difference between hypostaxis and parataxis is the use of conjunctions. Since English is a hypostaxis prominent language, the relationship between words and clauses in an English sentence is usually made explicit by conjunctions. In contrast, Chinese is a parataxis prominent language, for different elements in a sentence are often structured through temporal and logical sequence or meaning instead of conjunctions. This is the reason why most of English conjunctions need to be changed into other parts of speech or omitted in English-Chinese translation. Generally speaking, most English conjunctions’ function is limited and their meaning is regular, but “and” is an exception. “And”, one of the most frequently used words in English, seems easy to deal with at first sight but its usage is wide and flexible, and its meaning is variable and changeable. Translators often make mistakes on it in English-Chinese translation. Although the elements connected by “and” are coordinated in form, their relation in meaning may not be so straightforward. To render it properly, translators have to analyze it in the context accurately.
