Abstract:Two thousand years ago, Metaphor is known to all as a rhetorical device. The modern cognitive theory of metaphor holds that metaphor is not only a kind of language phenomenon, but a basic and common cognitive mode for people to understand the world, explaining people’s concept formation, thought process, cognition development, and action basis and so on. No matter in English or Chinese, the using of metaphor is very common. By analyzing metaphor’s characteristic and use, we could cognize its form and use comprehensively. In English and Chinese, metaphor of anger can be found everywhere. This essay will give a brief introduction to metaphor’s definition, importance and function in life. As a result, the general similarities and the differences of the “anger” metaphor in English and Chinese would be seen. The reasons for its general similarities and differences will be elaborated, which is the common cognition foundation and the different cultural context. To learn the characteristic and using of metaphor makes human know and understand the world they live by to a larger extent. Human society will be more harmonious, civilized and ascensive under keeping cognizing to discover something new.
