Abstract:John Updike, one of the most influential writers in contemporary American literary history, is well-known for his Rabbit series. Among his numerous works, Rabbit Redux is regarded as the angriest and most controversial one. Jill, as a hippie culture representative in Rabbit Redux, is one of the most tragic figure. This paper begins with the introduction of John Updike and his works. Besides, the background and significance of the present study are also provided. Then, in Chapter Two, some knowledge about hippie culture is analyzed, including its background, characteristics and influence. In Chapter Three and Chapter Four, the writer puts focus on the image of Jill, a rebel of traditional American culture, to help readers comprehend the great impact on the youth and on the life style and social moral values caused by hippie culture as well as the conflicts between the traditional culture and hippie culture.
