Abstract:Relevance Theory is a cognitive theory, which is the basis of cognitive linguistics. According to Relevance Theory, translation is a process of dual ostension-inference. During the process, the translator plays two roles of readers and communicators. This paper first introduces the Relevance Theory and its interpretation for the essence, the process and the standard of translation, and then analyzes the two versions of Teahouse written by Lao She to prove the guide function of Relevance Theory in dealing with the problems due to cultural factors in the translation practice.
