ABSTRACT:The “new words” section in teaching Chinese as a foreign language( TCFL) textbooks is of great importance to non-native Chinese language learner. If the vocabulary in the section are translated and annotated inappropriately, the purpose to transmit the language and culture information can not be realized, and it may be difficult for the foreign learners to grasp the new words' meaning. This paper made a survey about the three sets of TCFL textbooks: Textbook of Chinese Language( Yang Jizhou: Beijing Language and Culture University Press), Standard Chinese Course( Huang Zhencheng: Beijing University Press: 1998) and 40 Lessons for Basic Chinese Language( East China Normal University Press: 2004), and summarized several suggestions for English annotation: 1)avoiding to choose the senses out of the context; 2)morphemes and words are both annotated; 3)uniting literal translation and free translation as a method; 4) taking “filling”and other noting methods.
