Abstract:The Joy Luck Club is a novel on two generations---mother and daughter---of four Chinese American families. Having experienced numerous hardships in old China, the four mothers had to leave for America to make a living while the daughters were born and grew up in America. Therefore, there are always many conflicts between them. But finally the Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters reconciled because of the inseparable same blood ties. This paper aims to interpret the mother-daughter relationship in The Joy Luck Club by analyzing their conflicts and divergence. And in the end the researcher comes to the conclusion that it's two distinctively cultural backgrounds, language barriers, along with different views on family education and marriage that make their relationship become tensed and cause lots of quarrels. Nevertheless, all the quarrels and confrontations could be resolved because of the greatness of maternal love and mutual understanding between the mothers and daughters.
