Abstract
There are two kinds of communication. One is verbal communication, also known as language, which includes spoken language and written language; the other is non-verbal communication. Although language is widely known as the primary communication mode, it is not the only tool for us to communicate. During the process of communication, people express their emotions, deliver messages or exchange ideas not only through verbal communication, but also non-verbal communication. And according to experts, non-verbal communication can express more information than verbal communication in the daily life. Body language, as a vital type of non-verbal communication, plays an important role in the process of interaction. Body language known as “kinesics”, is developed earlier than language and it is the initial way for human beings to communicate. It is a kind of non-verbal communication in which physical behaviors other than words are used to express ideas, including facial expressions, eye movement, body posture, gestures, touch and the use of space, etc. The paper concentrates on the study of body language, containing the signified and signifier of body language, the realization of body language and the roles of body language. Then, it takes the text “Blackmail” in Advanced English as an example, since the story contains a great many body languages, which are vivid and exquisite. By analyzing the applications and the meanings of body language in the “Blackmail”, we could get a further understanding of the characters as well as the functions of body language. Finally, this paper makes an analysis about the conflicts of body language between Chinese and Americans, which is benefit for us to use body language properly both in our daily life and in the process of inter-cultural communication.
