ABSTRACT
Transitional words are the ones to show the relationship between words, sentences or paragraphs of a discourse. They are the bridge helping readers to understand the transition between parts. Transitional words play a vital role in language use and comprehension. They are the necessary condition for the formation of discourses and also one of the important components of discourse. This paper uses three methods including literature research, comparative method, and analytical method to make an in-depth study and analysis of transitional words. It not only generally introduces transitional words, but also explains its theoretical framework. In order to realize a deep understanding and flexible use of transitional words, this paper analyses transitional words from five aspects which are classification, function, wrong use, rules, and the functions and strategies in reading and writing. Based on all the previous research at home and abroad, the paper summarizes the limitations of the study and comes up with some practical ideas expecting to offer help to the following study of transitional words.
