Abstract
In the novel Love in the Time of Cholera, Marquez shows two different types of love: romantic love, and harmonious love. Fermina, the female protagonist, is a woman with a collection of beauty, independence and contradiction. As the title of the book, the love of Florentino and Fermina is as cholera. Only staying with Florentino, Fermina gets ideal love and dares to be crazy for love, which she has not experienced in her marriage. On the contrary, Fermina does not own passionate love in her marriage, but she is content with her life. Florentino and Fermina are so old when they decide to get together. Their appearance and body are withered, but their love is full of passion.
The dissertation introduces Fermina’ s view of love and marriage, and analyzes the social factors and personal factors which lead to the change of Fermina’ s view of love as well as Fermina’ s view of marriage. Women’ s subordinate position and Fermina’ s social status exert great influence on Fermina’ s life and choices; Latin American culture, free from mere conventionality, and European culture, represented by civilization and common life, have fierce collision in this book; Fermina' s weakness of human nature, her resistance against his father, as well as her suspicion towards love, shows her view of love in different stages of life.
The analysis aims to understand and appreciate the piece of literary work.
