Abstract
Pride and Prejudice tells the romantic story of Mr. Darcy, the large landowner in Derbyshire and Elizabeth, the daughter of squire Mr. Bennet in the end of eighteen century. In this story, the barrier originating from Mr. Darcy’s ‘pride’ and Elizabeth’s ‘prejudice’ which prevent them approching each other almost spoils their chances of marrying well. However, readers only pay attention to the ‘pride’ and ‘prejudice’ which are mentioned in the original work. This thesis is to study on the social background of Pride and Prejudice, the rationality of hidden‘pride’ and ‘prejudice’which help to overcome the misunderstanding between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. It is the real factor that leads to their marriage. The novel also mirrors the real society which focuses on profit and ignores affection.
