Abstract
As distinctions between the English proper noun and the common noun gradually fade during practical use of English language, more and more commonized proper nouns are applied widely in cross-cultural communication and the English literature. This thesis tries to give a detailed explanation for the commonization of English proper nouns from three aspects: origins of the commonized proper nouns, motivations for commonization and commonization types. Commonized proper nouns have three main origins, specifically, from names of countries and places, names of famous figures as well as names of trademarks and books. From the study of their origins, the author tries to figure out the motivation for commonization from two perspectives and further divides the commonization types into complete commonization, partial commonization, intermediate commonization and multiple commonization. Based on the findings of this study, the author concludes that motivation for commonization comes from association. The study of commonized English proper nouns and motivation for commonization plays an important role in the understanding and application of commonized English proper nouns in cross-cultural communication and thus is a good way for us to have a better understanding of English words and language culture.
Key words: commonization; commonized English proper nouns; motivation; association
