Abstract
The Chinese-English Dictionary (volume one) (CED for short), with Lu Gusun as its editor-in-chief, published by the Fudan University Press in 2015, is the latest of its kind in the mainland of China. Owing to its great merits and unique features, the publication of it caused a stir in the fields of lexicography, translation studies, the English learning, the teaching of Chinese and so on. This paper, therefore, conducts a lexicographical review of it. Firstly, a survey of CED is made, concerning its organization as well as the main contents. Secondly, some evaluative criteria for bilingualized dictionaries are discussed, including the defining of evaluative criteria, some typical evaluative principles in lexicography, and the evaluative contents in this aspect. Thirdly, the main features of CED is elaborated and they are: (1) a large inclusion of headwords and entries, (2) abundant and appropriate definitions, (3) typical and plentiful examples, (4) accurate and detailed register/style labeling, (5) the additional information in origin and motivation, (6) the absorption of some words or expressions from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and the overseas Chinese communities, and (7) the citation of many Chinese literary quotations. Last but not least, some of its shortcomings are also pointed out, and for example, the inclusion of proper nouns should be reconsidered. Nevertheless, on the basis of these virtues, it concludes that among the various Chinese-English dictionaries, CED is the best so far and it definitely meets the lexicographical standards.
