Abstract
With the accelerating process of globalization, countries all over the world are getting closer and closer, and cross-cultural communication is becoming more and more vital, which highlights the importance of translation. Translation is a bridge connecting different cultures, and people from different cultures are unable to communicate with each other without this bridge.
Proverb translation has been the most challenging one among different kinds of text translations all the time. Proverb is an epitome of culture in a country or region, it not only contains the exquisite language but also reflects the rich ethnic cultural characteristics. Due to the differences in historical and cultural backgrounds, social customs and others, the cultures carried by the two languages are totally different, which brings certain difficulties to translation.
The two concepts “domestication” and “foreignization”, put forward by American scholar Lawrence Venuti, have always been the bone of contention. The translator intends to retain the original style and charm of the source text, and also wants to make it easy for readers to understand and accept it, which creates great obstacles in the translation process. In order to better carry out the proverb translation, make readers understand proverbs more deeply and promote Sino-Foreign cultural exchange, this paper conducts the research on translation strategies of English proverbs from the perspective of domestication and foreignization.
