Abstract: As a classic of literature, the Bible has a profound influence upon Western civilization. Meanwhile, it has recorded many distinct characters. Samson, one of the figures in the Book of Judges, famous for his supernatural power, is different from others. However, his foolhardiness, personal and other issues made him accomplish nothing. It’s a shame that even he had sacrificed himself, still could not meet God’s command to save the Israel. And what he had done did not worth the name of a judge nor the supernatural power he had owned. So it is himself who created the tragic life. This paper will focus on studying the causes of Samson’s tragedy and the comparison between the prototype and the variant in Milton’s Samson Agonistes to provide readers with a better understanding about Samson.
