Abstract:Different cultures usually conflict with each other. Because of cultures and education, people from different cultures usually hold different values of life and have different thinking styles, which will lead to collisions and misunderstandings. However, with the international contact and cooperation, cultural collisions will begin to converge. The Joy Luck Club, the masterpiece of Amy Tan, is one of the representatives which describe the collisions and fusions of cultures.
The paper reveals the collision and fusion of Chinese and American culture by analyzing the argument and compromises of the four mothers and daughters in education, marriage and living philosophies in the Joy Luck Club. Gradually, they realize that it is love and communication that can avoid conflicts and misunderstandings. So does different cultures. What’s more, through the analysis of the reasons of fusions, this paper concludes that the acceptance of American culture, kinship, the multicultural consciousness and the rise of China contribute to the fusions of Chinese and American culture. Finally, it concludes that it is respect and understanding that can avoid conflicts between different cultures and that the fusion is an inevitable trend of different cultures.
