Abstract
In recent decades, China has undergone significant improvements in every aspect. China’s status on the international arena is increasingly rising, which makes foreigners gradually pay close attention to China’s development. Report on the Work of Government (RWG for shorter) includes not only the accomplishments in economy, politics, culture and other aspects last year, but also the future trend and development. It provides a great channel for foreigners to know China’s situation and culture. RWG is a typical political essay, in which there are lots of Chinese culture-loaded words reflecting Chinese characteristics, adding the difficulty of translation. These culture-loaded words carry profound Chinese culture, playing an important role in the communication and cooperation. Thus the study on the C-E translation of culture loaded words in RWG in 2016 is of great significance.
The thesis aims to take the culture-loaded words in RWG in 2016 as example and adopt literature research method, the qualitative research, the inductive method, and the case study method, to makes a further analysis of application of Skopos theory to the C-E translation of culture-loaded words in RWG in 2016. On the basis of it, the author uses examples to illustrate the translation methods of culture-loaded word, such as literal translation, literal translation plus annotation, free translation, and substitution, amplification and omission. Meanwhile, the author analyses whether the above translation methods realize the effect of Skopos theory. At last, it comes to a conclusion. The result shows that the literal translation, the literal translation plus annotation, amplification realize the effect of Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. And the substitution and free translation realize the effect of Skopos rule and coherence rule. The omission realizes the effect of the Skopos rule. So the Skopos theory can guide the translation of the culture-loaded words in RWG in 2016.
The thesis studies the C-E translation of culture-loaded words in RWG from the perspective of Skopos theory. The author hopes the targeted thesis can provide some effective translation methods for the translation of culture-loaded words in similar political essays to some extent. At the same time, it helps target readers know more about the source text and China’s development. Thus the propaganda of China’s fine culture can be promoted and the international status of China can be lifted.
