Abstract
Due to the great difference between Chinese address system and English address system, translators will face great difficulties in their translation. A Dream of Red Mansions, an embodiment of the cultural essence of China, incorporates a great variety of address terms, causing great difficulty in the translation process. This thesis seeks to correctly render these terms. It consists of five parts. Part one is a general introduction to this research, with its purpose, methodology and organization. Part two is the literature review on this research topic, including features of address forms, domestication and foreignization and the long-standing argument over their proper use. Part three analyzes the different translation purposes of Yang Xianyi and Hawkes. Part four provides a detailed analysis of the translation of the address forms in the two editions from. Chapter six provides a conclusion to the research findings.
