Abstract
Nowadays, cooperative learning is highly advocated. Jigsaw teaching method, as one of the ways of cooperative learning, can stimulate students' learning enthusiasm to the greatest extent. Compared with traditional teaching method, it fully stresses the importance of students as active participants and propagates the communication and cooperation among students; and helps to exert students ' initiative, independence and creativity, which are essential to create active classroom atmosphere. The application of Jigsaw teaching method in reading teaching, especially in middle school, can improve students’ cognitive ability; cultivate their creative thinking and cooperative spirit. Therefore, it is an effective approach to the teaching of English reading in middle school. This paper introduces the background and definition of Jigsaw teaching method, expresses its processes and advantages, discusses some problems of the application of this teaching method and also gives the enlightenment for the teaching of reading in middle school.
