Abstract: In this dissertation, the writer adopts Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory to analyze and discuss three strategies in subtitling translation. The writer proposes the following three perspectives: 1. the principle of comprehensibility 2. the principle of economy 3. the principle of equivalent effect. This dissertation takes Chinese TV drama Empresses in the Palace for instance to analyze and discuss whether and how to reflect these three principles to demonstrate feasibility of communicative translation in subtitling translation. Finally, the writer gets the conclusion that under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory and the features of subtitling translation, the three principles proposed by the writer can be applied to subtitling translation.
Key words: subtitling translation; communicative translation theory; empresses in the palace
