Abstract
Garcia Marquez is a representative author of Latin American magical realism and one of the most influential writers in the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982 and his outstanding works has been considered "the 20th century literature benchmarking".
Love in the Time of Cholera was his first novel after winning the Nobel Prize for literature. Different from his great work One Hundred Years of Solitude, Garcia Marquez shook off the writing style of magical realism in his work Love in the Time of Cholera. It composedly told a love story which was more than fifty years, against the background of war, political unrest, and frequent occurrence of plague and diseases.
On the basis of previous studies, this thesis attempts to analyze the character of Ariza in Love in the Time of Cholera from Freud's theory of personality structure. This thesis also attempts to provide people an effective way to understand the love between Ariza and Fermina and different kinds of love in this novel by cutting in from the character image of Ariza. At last, this thesis aims to analyze the character image of Ariza and the love he gave to Fermina, so as to conclude the uniqueness of the image of Ariza in Marquez’s works and in the world literary gallery.
