Abstract:Toni Morrison is a renowned contemporary American black woman writer. Her work is emotionally rich, brief and poetic, and she is famous for her keen observation of black American life. Song of Solomon is her first work to win the Nobel Prize and her only work in which black men are the protagonists. The novel vividly demonstrates Milkman’s innocence, temptations, departures, adventures, epiphanies and self-understanding in his growth as well as the black living conditions of his time.
Initiation story, originated in Germany, is a story in which the protagonists get maturity and realize their position and role in the world through a spiritual crisis. Song of Solomon tells a story of the protagonist Milkman, who grows from an idle, irresponsible boy into a caring, responsible and mature adult. By studying and applying the theory of initiation novel, this paper thoroughly analyzes the growth of Milkman from infancy to maturity. In this process, Milkman also identifies himself with the black culture, and gains a sense of belonging and a strong pride in his black identity. It is hoped that this topic can provide a new perspective for the interpretation of this work.
