Abstract:F • Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby reveals the disillusionment of the young generation in the west in the 1920s, when they pursued the rebellion against tradition and desired to regain the faded passion in the life of modern city. The top concern of my graduating paper is to analyze the sense of loneliness of Jay Gatsby, the hero in the story. Thus, through a detailed analysis of the text, with more of a focus on the symbolic meaning of the green light, Gatsby’s interminable and senseless parties as well as his illusionary dream, this paper illustrates the deep sense of loneliness of the hero’s and the guests’ from different aspects, and then reveals the theme of the disillusionment of the American Dream.
Key words: F·Scott Fitzgerald; loneliness; disillusionment of the American dream
