Abstract
As a sweet food, candy has a very long history. It is rooted in human’s material life and spiritual life deeply. Candy becomes a kind of important cultural phenomenon. China and Britain form their respective systems of candy culture in different cultural backgrounds. In this system, the candy culture epitomizes cultural phenomena based on the combination of candy and culture. In contemporary society, the cultural exchange of China and the UK is strengthened continuously. It is more and more important to understand the differences of candy culture between China and the UK. Therefore, it’s significant to make a comparative research on candy culture between China and Britain.
This paper chooses Chinese candy and British candy as the breakthrough point and researches cultural differences of two countries from raw material of candy, packing of candy, craft of candy and role in people’s life. This thesis consists of five parts. Chapter One is introduction, which offers background, significance of the research, structure of the thesis. Chapter Two is literature review, which mainly states research status of candy culture. Chapter Three is the major part of this thesis, which analyzes differences of candy culture from raw material of candy, packing of candy, craft of candy and role in people’s life. Chapter Four explains causes which lead to the differences between Chinese candy culture and British candy culture. Chapter Five is a conclusion, including major findings and deficiency about cross-cultural communication.
